What Are the Main Causes of Motorcycle Accidents in Colorado?

We hear about motorcycle accidents all of the time, and unfortunately, newsworthy reports about them usually mean there was a fatality. Because motorcycles offer little external protection for cyclists, motorcycle riders are often the ones killed or seriously injured when they are involved in a collision. Despite the stereotype of motorcyclists being reckless and irresponsible, most are passionate about safety. There are many other things that can cause a motorcycle crash, and they are often not the fault of the motorcyclist.

Reasons for Colorado Motorcycle Accidents

Helmets are not required by law for motorcycle riders 18 years and older, but they can often prevent significant brain trauma. However, even when motorcyclists take precautions such as wearing safety gear, it may not be enough to prevent a serious injury. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported a rise in motorcycle rider deaths in 2018. In fact, motorcycle rider deaths have increased overall 30 percent between 2012 and 2018.

With motorcycle accidents on the rise in Colorado, it is as important as ever to consider mindfulness on the road. The following are some of the top reasons motorcycle accidents happen:

  • Left Turns: Making a left turn at an intersection, even with a green arrow, demands full focus on the road. A car driver may turn in front of a motorcyclist because he or she did not see the motorcycle, was distracted, or misjudged speed or distance. Drivers should be sure to avoid distractions and look for any motorcycles around their vehicle when making turns.

  • Car Doors: Like bicyclists, motorcyclists run the risk of being hit by a car door. If a vehicle passenger suddenly opens his or her car door on the roadway, a motorcyclist may not have time to brake before colliding with the automobile or occupant. Drivers and passengers should always check around their vehicles before opening their doors.

  • Rear-End Collisions: Even what would be considered a minor accident between two cars could mean life or death for a motorcycle driver. If a driver is following too closely behind a motorcycle, or if they fail to see a motorcycle that is stopped in front of them, they may be unable to avoid a collision. This can be very dangerous for motorcyclists, since they may not only be injured by the initial collision, but they could be thrown into traffic and struck by another vehicle.

Motorcyclists face significant dangers when on the road, since they do not have the same protection a vehicle offers. While any driver can make a mistake and cause an accident, the negligence of another motorist can lead to severe injuries or even death for motorcycle riders.
