Posted on January 29, 2025 in Car Accident

Larimer County, CO personal injury lawyerThe preliminary 2024 fatal crash numbers are in for Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, traffic deaths in the state decreased for the third year in a row. However, Fort Collins and Larimer County are among the worst in the state for fatal crashes.

If someone else causes a motor vehicle accident that injures you or claims a loved one’s life, you may qualify to pursue compensation. Working with an experienced Fort Collins, CO personal injury lawyer is important if you hope to collect as much as you are entitled to.

What Does the 2024 Crash Facts Report Say?

The following numbers are preliminary and may change. However, as of now, there were 684 Colorado traffic fatalities in 2024, representing a 5 percent decrease from 2023. Although most categories also saw a decrease, motorcycle deaths increased by 23 percent over 2023 totals, and construction zone fatalities rose by an astounding 94 percent.

Fort Collins ranks 7th highest in the state, with 14 fatalities and an 8 percent increase over 2023. Larimer County is also in seventh place, having 35 deaths and a 19 percent decrease. Although the report does not specify, several factors may contribute to the high number of serious crashes and traffic fatalities in the city and county.

Why Are Serious Crashes More Common in Larimer County?

Many traffic collisions have multiple contributing factors. Larimer County’s higher number of serious crashes and fatality rates may be due to:

  • Sight distance limitations at intersections

  • The high number of DWI and DUI drivers in the county

  • Speeding

  • Younger drivers and those 60 or older

  • Failure to wear seatbelts or helmets

  • Distracted driving

In an effort to reduce the number of accidents occurring at intersections, Larimer County has converted some into roundabouts. Most of the other contributing factors listed are negligent and preventable driver errors.

Why Does It Matter Why a Crash Occurred?

Personal injury and wrongful death claims are usually based on proving that someone’s negligence was responsible for the injury or death. To pursue compensation, you typically begin by filing an insurance claim against the at-fault party’s auto insurance policy. Without evidence that clearly links that person’s negligence to the harm you suffered, the insurance company is likely to deny your claim. Even with solid evidence, the insurer will probably try to reduce or eliminate the amount they pay you.

People who work with an effective lawyer usually receive substantially higher payouts. We investigate your accident to gather evidence that establishes liability, and we know how to overcome the obstacles that insurers often try to put in your way.
